Project Hell Ride – Phase III (The Big Job)

Since I couldn’t keep track of the dates, some were messed up as I sometime uploaded old & new pictures all at once. I have arranged the pictures in order though, you would have to catch up with the updates in reverse order i.e. from bottom to top!

Yes, there were huge gaps in progress of the project, often for days and sometimes for months due to several unavoidable reasons. So, there’re a quite a number of pictures (differential, suspension etc setups) I have missed uploading but fortunately do have in camera & laptop, I’d keep putting them as per timeline on this thread. So, keep checking for updates.

Strut-bar made of steel for traction supports have been put! One in the engine bay, other under the floor to (a) tight-grip the transmission with chassis (b) strengthen the side-hit factor! another strut bar would be put in the boot to hold tight the rear-wheels.

As the previous picture tells and as planned, we had brought (today) a couple of fabricators to have an idea of time duration and expense to go for: (a) fender flairs (b) front lip spoler (c) fine-denting from inside out that leaves the vehilce to paint-ready stage (d) custom nose job (e) strengthening of front chassis (f) intercooler mounts (g) wind-sheilds & windows installations (h) some internal fabrications (i) etc etc…

Almost every fabricator asked for not less than two months so we decided to take Red Storm back to Lahore for the cosmetics & aesthetics

Red Storm is now on the alignment duct to get front camber-angles adjusted. Unlike in the previous picture, we have temporarily put taller springs in rear n stripped da fender apart- so to let it (temporarily) all-terrain drive-comfy for test-drive and- for da lowered suspension made da fender edge touch da tyre in a way dat it cud tear da tyre in a minute during our test-drive. After the alignment, we took multple test-drives, 8 drivers concluded the test, checked the transmission, LSD diff’s claimed limited spin, braking system, suspension, turbo n almost everythg except 360 degree spin. Everything went as per plans i.e. PERFECT, expect the AFM which troubled and didn’t let the turbo work, it is now undergoing thorough diagnostics, a spare AFM has also been sent for for test purposes and shall soon arrive. As the Red Storm rises not-so-bad, later (next day; as da previously mentioned jobs had already taken us late at night n we were dead-dired due to a 400+km (lhr-to-isb) drive) moved da Red Storm to I9, Islamabad first thing as it was a local holiday n da next working day had already been scheduled for final cosmetics reviews.

Taking the Red Storm to the alignment bay next-door. You might be noticing the rear wheel very lowered (well, this low is what i’d keep it for all those reasons performance vehicles are kept low), well… that in fact is why we had to remove front fenders too; reason being the fenders not yet flaired enough to take the wheel in!

Well, we have been putting things that fire big time, of course the coolant unit should also be big enough to handle the heat. So, this is our radiator; a BMW 5 Series original aftermarket radiator.

Thursday, December 17, 2009, Islamabad – Since we hadn’t yet purchase the drycell batteries, a stand-alone heavy duty power plant has been brought to start the big machine; the monster motor. Engine had been started and tested previously, but outside the bay. This is the first time in months the monster 1JZ GTE VVTi 24 Valve DOHC Turbo V6 is being prepared for start-up inside the Red Storm; the Celica. Engine has just been drained the old (a year old) oil in its chamber from. Some startch would still remain in champer as formed by that old oil, but this run up would burn that up. Now, engine’s just been lubricated with a special combination of viscous engine flueds. These engine flueds would be drained after the test-ride- that is expected in a couple of days, inshaAllah- and 1JZ shall swallow yet another nice combination of flueds of required visousity as soon as it get rids of all the old shit. During the starting process, one self-motor was over-heated and destroyed it’s chrome plates, a back-up motor was already there awaiting it’s turn, it did well and started the engine like anything! Here, you can listen to the engine starting & sound: http://www.omerjamil.com/celica/celica-ta22-ta23-suspension-radiator-1jz-swap/ Update: Almost-new suspension of Toyota Crown Royal Saloon had been purchased already and as of yesterday (December 19th, 2009) 80% of the work had been done, today (on December 20th, 2009) we’re to finish it off, inshaAllah See the next pictures… (above)

OmEr Jamil engine sound has been uploaded to Celica’s blog, here: http://www.omerjamil.com/celica/celica-ta22-ta23-suspension-radiator-1jz-swap/

Since the big motor needs larger intercooler and over-head doesn’t seem to be an option here, intercooler would be placed at front, we might have to sacrifice the aircon as there wouldn’t be any room left for condenser+fan… I believe, it’s alright for not having aircon for the primary objective of this Hell Ride is to produce torque, and that too at the verge of it; that’s what makes it a cool ride anyway and to be true, thanddé pasiné tau aa hi jaté hain speed par:p

Islamabad, Pakistan

By the grace of Almight, as the LSD differential (toyota surf’s) setup and adjustable camber had been done, we got the internal wiring started immediately (engine wiring had already been done as it had come along the package). Now, 95% of the wiring had been done, windows have also been automated and all motors, electric relays, switches and electrical connection-joint grips have been put brand-new. Wiring (all wires) also is totally brand-new and completely concealed. New 95MM HD main-power artery has also been laid back & forth.

Besides the wiring, fuel, oil and break lines have also been replaced by brand new high-pressure high-qulity lines.

We have put 3″ down-pipe straight end-to-end from exhaust for best possible free-flow. A Carbon-Fibre exhaust has also been put. RedStorm is now ready for cosmetics (fender-flairs, front lip-spoiler & hood-duct for intercooler) and then paint-job, Alhamdolillah

I am uploading all these phases’ detailing pictures in a while, keep checking http://www.OmErJamil.com/celica

Air-Flow Sensor was not yet placed neither was intercooler, so we let the turbo off. Rear wall at workshop added some unwanted echo, live with it folks and of course, the engine bay as well as the entire body would go for the paint job!

Here, the RedStorm had now been made half self-start, below it speaks of the growlin’ bitchin’ beast roars.

Well, we have been putting things that fire big time, of course the coolant should also be big enough to handle the heat. So, this is our radiator; a BMW 5 Series original aftermarket radiator. Oh yes, we are (have to) put intercooler over-head under-hood:

Engine had been started and tested previously, but outside the bay. This is the first time in months the monster 1JZ GTE VVTi 24 Valve DOHC Turbo V6 is being prepared for start-up inside the RedStorm; the Celica.

Below is the audio of engine starting and sound , I hope it works:-)

Update: Almost-new suspension of Toyota Crown Royal Saloon had been purchased already and as of yesterday (December 19th, 2009) 80% of the work had been done, today (on December 20th, 2009) we’re to finish it off, inshaAllah

Since the dry fitting of engine and transmission had already been done. Recent updates are that the mounts for engine and transmission have been finalized as the differential job was in progress lately.

Due to the smaller engine bay, we’re having some issues with putting even the custom slim radiator in. Engine has been taken out and put back several times so far and I believe soon we would get done with this too.

The picture above is an old one; of the time when the engine was dry-fitted only.

Due to severe back-ache, I’m avoiding a long drive. In a week, may be this weekend, I’d go to Islamabad and pay Red Storm a visit. Below are more old pictures, I would soon upload the new pictures and share with you here.

With the previous owner (Bilal) of this TA23 (famous among folks as BLUE DEVIL), day and time had been decided with the help of Aaqib bhai. As scheduled, I with a friend of mine had arrived at Islamabad on May 13th.

May 14th was the day, we picked up Bilal from G.I.K Instt. and headed towards Peshawar where the TA23 was parked. There were some issues with the car which were later settled. Toyota 4E-FTE powered Blue Devil had some of its exterior parts stolen during its long stay at workshop (for engine swap). It wasn’t in as good condition anymore but the due work was just routine type and maintenance related.

Anyway, the deal- at that time and day- couldn’t be finalized due to some issues and we came back to Islamabad where we had a night stay and left for Peshawar again next morning. Unfortunately, it was Friday and wasn’t a good one for us because the local market use to remain closed on Fridays. Next was the last working day of the week and I had loads stuff to push close at Lahore. After taking a little rest we came back Lahore.

Meanwhile, Bilal had arrived at Lahore too. Today, on May 19th, 2009 I went to him and we mutually settled a good deal. It was nice dealing with Bilal all the way.

On Friday May 22nd, I left for Islamabad, reached late night so left for Peshawar the next morning, brought the beauty along and left it with Aaqib bhai for engine swap.

BTW, the 4E-FTE had a large turbo and was also intercooled, though the differential made a little noise as it was kind of dry but the drive with this engine was awesome too; kept spinning the tail even in the 4th shift!

So, that’s the story behind the purchase of famous BLUE DEVIL I will keep updating further details.

Attached you can view some of its famous pictures; right now- its tail lights, both bumpers and left door window’s missing, also now it has different alloy rims but with new and nice tyres:
